california_king_bedCalifornia, like the rest of the United States, has undergone a long history of changes when it comes to home décor. People have slowly made the transition from decade to decade, and with each new year comes new fads, trends, and styles. Looking back over the past centuries, there are some pretty major changes, and each one plays an important role in how homes are set up and decorated today. If you are looking to redecorate your home or add a few more modern touches, it might be useful to know what to look for in keeping with the times.

Wallpaper to Paint

Starting in the later half of the 20th century, there was a huge movement in home décor involving wall decoration. For the majority of the years before that, people had used wallpaper as a way to cover their walls. However, nowadays if you go into a person’s home, you will most likely find that their walls are covered in paint rather than paper. This switch came about mostly due to a simple difference in preference from previous generations. People today seem to really prefer paint to wallpaper. For one, wallpaper in general can be pretty hideous.

Now, there are some good-looking options out there, but most of the time, this kind of wall covering is extremely out of date and fits the older generation better than anyone else. The only real reason someone might choose to wallpaper a house is because it is sometimes inexpensive or they have an affinity for the older days. Wallpaper is a huge undertaking to put up and take down (taking several hours at the least), unlike paint, which can generally be rolled onto the wall within an hour or less. For good reasons, paint is definitely the popular way to go today.

Curtains to Shutters

Another new trend of which you should be aware is having shutters in the home rather than curtains or drapes. In the earlier years, the use of cloth material to cover windows was a huge fad. People liked the elegant and sophisticated look that curtains and drapes brought to a room. However, these window treatments are not always as effective as shutters, for example. Shutters are a lot better at controlling the sun and keeping the room temperature at a comfortable level.

Not only that, but shutters are often easier to maintain than anything else. They only need to be dusted or wiped down every few weeks just to keep them looking nice. Even after being dusted, they will not lose their looks or functionality. However, curtains actually have to be washed, which can cause them to wear thin or lose their color, both of which are definitely not good qualities. If you want your home to keep the same look and feel for quite some time, shutters are the optimum choice, as many people have discovered as of late.

Patterns to Solids

One of the main changes that has also occurred over the last few decades is a switch from bold patterns and crazy colors to more sophisticated solids. Though there has been a little bit of a trend back towards the patterns and such lately, in general, people tend to really prefer solid colors for their home. Where people might used to have a hot pink polka dot sofa with lime green striped walls and orange carpet, a much more acceptable style today would be a nice brown leather sofa, burgundy walls, and a beige carpet—colors that compliment each other and don’t overwhelm the eye.

Now that you are aware of some of the most recent styles in California home décor, you can be confident in any revisions you want to make to your home.
