You’ve read dozens of articles on what the experts have to say about decorating a nursery. Learn what average parents have to say about it!
When it comes to baby nursery ideas, there is plenty of advice from the “experts” floating around the Internet, but what do other average, new parents (just like yourself) have to say?  What advice would they offer you about window treatments, color palettes, and design aesthetics? Here is some advice from some of our flesh and blood readers we think you will find useful!

  • Add a personal element. Add plenty of colorful pictures or family photos to the wall. The different images are going to stimulate your baby. My daughter loves looking at the different pictures while I change her diaper. Already, she’s starting to recognize familiar faces. –lovemylittleone
  • Find one element that you really love. It could be anything, from a clothing print to a blanket to a piece of art. Use that element to find the color palette for your nursery. Doing so gives your nursery a pulled together, cohesive look. –KissesFromMommy
  • Make sure that everything you buy, from window treatments to clothing to rugs, is machine washable. If you buy anything that says “spot clean” or “dry clean” only, I guarantee you are going to regret it pretty fast! –adixierebel
  • Don’t limit yourself to just looking in baby store catalogs for design and décor ideas! Some of my favorite elements of my son’s nursery came from trendy, college aged aimed décor magazines! If you run out of ideas, visit the websites of some famous New York designers and see the nurseries they have created, I guarantee you’ll feel inspired! –krystalmaesue
  • Don’t put your crib near a window! Once your baby can pull themselves up on the side of the crib, everything is fair game. I guarantee that you’ll wake up one morning and your window treatments will just be gone! –CaseyMiller
  • Keep the décor uncluttered and simple. Trust me, there will be plenty of that to deal with later. I prefer to use self-adhesive wall murals and borders. They’re inexpensive and simple to remove when you’re ready to change them out. –ElizabethA

Start with your crib, and get started early! The crib usually ends of being the focal point of your nursery, and you’re going to need to provide yourself with plenty of time for it to be shipped and delivered. Backorders, damage from shipping, and any one of a number of other problems can delay delivery by days or weeks. Since the crib usually the biggest item in the nursery, you need to know what it looks like before you can start planning the rest of the décor. –LindseyRae

Take this practical, hard won knowledge to heart when planning the nursery for your impending bundle of joy!
