Solstice is a Latin word for “sun-stopping” or “sun stands still”. During a solstice the sun stays in the sky for a ![summer sun](https://blog.allaboutblinds.net/hs-fs/hubfs/bigstock-Sky-5666709_copy.jpg?width=277&name=bigstock-Sky-5666709_copy.jpg)longer time than it usually does. This causes the sun to rise to the north of due east and set to the north of due west (and not at its usual points on the horizon). It occurs when the Earth’s axis tilts 23.5 degrees towards the sun, resulting in either the Tropic of Cancer in the north or the Tropic of Capricorn in the south to have the sun directly over them. This phenomenon is called summer solar solstice, when it happens during the summer time.

**Horizontal Blinds**

Although Plantation Shutters are the most popular, Blinds are the biggest seller. Blinds are more cost efficient than other window treatments (as much as 4 - 5 times less expensive than Plantation Shutters). On average, horizontal blinds cost about $80 - $100 per window. While the idea of blinds may seem outdated to some, Hunter Douglas, Graber, Norman and Vista all offer blind options that are timeless. Pictured below, you’ll see how the 2 inch louvers have been inserted into the ladder strings hanging from the metal head rail.
