It is very important to clear clutter from your life and your home, periodically. If you don’t, you will get bogged down by them both literally and figuratively. Just organizing your closet properly might clear up space, enough to give 50% extra space, according to experts. Once you get your closet customized and organized, hunting around in piles of clothing will become a thing of the past, saving you precious time in the mornings when you are rushing to get ready for work.

Both aesthetics and Feng Shui dictate that clutter is bad for you. Get your closet organized, and while you’re at it, get it customized too. If you have the space to get yourcloset customized to suit your purpose, it’s wonderful. If not, here are some tips on saving space, and organizing your closet. Many lifestyle coaches advise you to clear clutter, particularly from your closet and your kitchen, as these are two areas in every home where clutter accumulates.

The first step is to visualize how you want your closet to look; you can hunt around in magazines for inspiration. The next step is to categorize your clothes into jeans, skirts, blouses, suits, sweaters, etc. Once you categorize you will find it easy to move on to the next step, which is prioritize: separate clothes you haven’t worn in the last six months. If you don’t want to part with them right away, put them in a plastic box for another 6 months; at the end, if you don’t recall what’s inside or haven’t missed them, it’s time to give them away.

Use the walls; if your closet space is at a premium, use wall hanging racks for your shoes and purses. This will help you clear up more space on the shelves. Place socks, innerwear and lingerie in boxes. They come in all sizes and shapes to suit your closet and your needs. This improves the looks and the efficiency as well. In fact, you can place similar shoes in boxes and stack them, with a photo displayed so that you don’t pick the wrong box in a hurry.

If you have the luxury of space, separate your summer and winter clothes. If not, place cleaned winter clothes in vacuum sealed storage bags and put them away. This gives you better storage for part of the year, though your summer clothes might not occupy as much as the winter ones. Use belt racks or tie racks for hanging belts and ties. Some experts recommend using only one type of hanger for all your clothes, as this looks aesthetically appealing.

You can also create or improve the ambience in your closet by placing potpourri or flower dust, to give your clothes a nice scent. Another mood enhancer can be some nice unobtrusive music, which can be soothing and calming. After getting your closet organized, be sure to change your old habits. If you don’t stop dumping your used clothes willy-nilly in the closet, all the efforts at organizing it are wasted. So, make it a point to at least place the used clothes on a hook, if not in its actual place. This single step, when it becomes a habit, will stop you from going back to a cluttered closet.
