Winter is finally over, and instead of closing your blinds, shades and shutters to keep out the cold, it’s time to let in the sunshine, and bring spring colors into your home to celebrate the awakening of the outside world.  Lose the heavy textiles and switch to light, breezy fabrics and sheers.  Here are some ideas for fresh and lovely spring window treatments.

Use Bright Spring Colors

Bring in warm blues, greens, yellows and tan or beige colors to freshen up your interior.  You don’t have to be stuck with the same window treatments year round; change them at least twice a year or more to reflect the changing of the seasons.  Use darker, heavy fabrics to make your home warm and cozy in the winter months, and light and breezy colors and fabrics during warmer months.  Consider colorful Roman shades, light colored blinds and modern looking valances.

Trade Curtains for Blinds

Try switching from heavy draperies to clean white plantation shutters, or modern looking vertical blinds to allow for uninterrupted views of your favorite exteriors.  Choose from modern treatments with clean lines or traditional ornate cornice headers for an old fashioned feel.

Layer Window Treatments

You don’t have to stick with just one type of window treatment.  Consider layering several different types of treatments to combine color, texture and pattern.  Sheers can protect you from glare, while floor to ceiling window treatments will elongate your walls and cause the room to look larger.

Layering your window treatments gives you more versatility during those in-between months, when blasts of cold weather are interspersed between warm spring conditions.

Select the Right Look for Your Space

We’ve all done it; fallen in love with a dreamy-looking window treatment only to discover that it doesn’t look right on our own windows, either clashing with our décor or just not fitting the window or sun exposure.  Consider your own space before bringing in a new window treatment.

Additionally, remember that your home loses or gains heat through the windows.  If you have heavy sun exposure, therefore, you will want window treatments that filter out light and heat.  You might adore valances, but they don’t go very far towards accomplishing this goal.  You may need to add sheers or light shades.

Use spring cleaning and redecorating as an opportunity for renewal; to bring in bright colors and light fabrics that will make your home appear fresh and inviting.  Visit your favorite window treatment or home improvement store to see inspiring window treatments that will get your creative juices flowing!
